Why Lithium Ion 

Lithium Ion has excellent cycle life and high specific energy, so it is lighter for the same energy in weight sensitive devices such as aircraft, man portable, and satellites. It has high energy density making it smaller for the same energy in devices such as submarines, HEV, man portable, and UUV.

Excellent life makes it less expensive per cycle. Lithium Ion allows a shift in asset usage as battery cost and effort is greatly reduced. There is no normal maintenance required and has a much smaller thermal signature due to higher energy efficiency. 97% vs. 85% (or less) = 80% less heat given off.
